OUR SECOND FAMILY

Maria & Andrew

Maria's Request on 08.27.08:

My name is Maria. I am Andrew's Fiancé. Andrew just had surgery on his arm and is unable to type. Drew and I met almost 5 years ago. We dated for about a month and a half up until he had to leave for boot camp. We kept in touch through letters for quite some time until we stopped receiving each other’s notes. Years went by and word came that on his deployment to Iraq he was very badly injured and almost lost his arm. I had no idea how bad off he was or how to even reach him. One day I was online and I saw him logged on too. We started to talk and hit it off again. As for Drew, he was at Walter Reed for months since last Sept. Today (9/1) is his year anniversary of getting injured. He has had over a dozen surgeries on his arm and has been doing tons of rehab to regain movement. He currently is back at Walter Reed for another surgery, which he just had last Tuesday. Hopefully I can be with him.

Our Response on 08.28.08:

Dear Maria,

We have read your request for travel (attached below). We understand you want to come to Washington this weekend to visit your fiancé who is currently wounded and recovering at Walter Reed. I have some very good news for you Maria; we recently raised enough money to purchase your plane ticket. Are you ready to come to see Andrew? Pack your bags. Your plane leaves tonight. Literally.

Please call our travel agent, Kim xxx at xxx-xxx-xxxx. She is waiting for your call and will take care of planning and booking your flight for the weekend.
Also, we have partnered with the Yellow Ribbon Fund who will help you with transportation and lodging. Please call Dianne xxx at xxx-xxx-xxxx. I'm not sure what they have available this weekend, but I am sure they will do whatever they can for you.

Please call us if you need anything. Your fiancé is a hero and he needs you by his side. We understand and we appreciate you both.
With great respect - Luke’s Wings

09.11.08 (After the trip):

Dear Luke’s Wings:

The surgery went very well and I had a few complications afterwards, but nothing severe.  I am now an outpatient and hoping to fly back home this weekend.  I do have another surgery in 8-12 months from now, and I might have to send you an email when that happens to get Maria back out here with me.  I can’t say thank you enough for you and all of the individuals who help out wounded soldiers and make us feel appreciated. So thanks again, Andrew
