The request from Sergeant John M. on Monday 02.23.09:
Dear Luke’s Wings:
I am Sergeant John M. We were headed into a village for a weapons cache. On the way into the village, we struck an IED consisting of an anti tank mine and approximately 55 gallons of homemade explosives. The blast resulted in major damage to the Stryker. The IED blew up directly underneath me and the injuries were to both legs and both feet. Out of 7 soldiers in the Styker, one had minor injuries on a leg, several had concussions, and all survived. But because it struck us directly underneath me, I took the worst of it.
I am married with 2 wonderful little girls. I’m from a big blended family that also includes 2 brothers and 2 sisters. I like rock climbing, working on cars, and reading mysteries. I want to recover 100% so I can get back to the things I live to do.
I am reaching out to you today because I would like to bring my parents into town this Thursday, from February 26th to March 2nd
Sincerely,
Sergeant John M
The Luke’s Wings reply to Sergeant John M. on Tuesday 02.24.09
Dear John,
Thank you for your letter. We are proud to inform you that we will be footing the bill for your parents to come visit you in just a few short days.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, February 25th over 300 people will gather at L2 Lounge in Washington, DC to take part in a grand fashion show – featuring a former and current Miss DC, Redskins Cheerleaders, professional models, and local celebrities – all of whom will give their time to ensure that your parents will have the chance to see you at no personal cost. It will be a great event, John, and the best part of it is that each guest will dig enthusiastically into their pockets to finance your parent’s airplane tickets and to enable other wounded veterans like you to see their families.
What a blessing that each soldier in your team survived that horrific attack. We hope and pray for their full recovery. And while many of the folks that will attend the fashion show may never have served in uniform; all of them realize that it is your service, and that of your fellow soldiers in arms, that sustains our way of life.
John – we wish you and your family the very best. Enjoy the time you spend with your family. We are confident that you’ll be back under a hood before you know it.
Sincerely,
The Luke’s Wings Team
Follow up after your soldier’s family’s trip to DC:
Dear Luke’s Wings,
We had a great time. I think that you have everything perfectly in place. We did not have any issues with travel or lodging. Thank you and everyone else that made it possible for me to see my family. If I can assist in any way please just let me know.
John
