The request from Josh S.:

September 8, 2010

Dear Luke’s Wings,

My name is Corporal Joshua S. I am currently at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. On October 28th, 2009, I was blown up by an IED in Afghanistan while on a patrol. I had to have both of my legs amputated below the knees. I also suffered severe burns and am treated for them at the Burn Center in the Intrepid here at BAMC.

Luke’s Wings flew my fiancé to see me in June. It was so wonderful to see my love again. I am having surgery on my legs next week and would very much like to have my mother here with me this time. Can you help me fly her from Arizona to San Antonio this Sunday, September 12? I’m sorry for the short notice, but it would mean the world to me to have my mother here with me next week.

I play wheelchair basketball these days. I have a younger brother. After I recover from the injuries I hope to find a college to attend and then a good job doing something I love. As always, thank you for your help. It means the world to me.

Sincerely,
Cpl. Joshua S.

Luke’s Wings Response:

September 9, 2010

Dear Joshua,

Yes. Please tell your lovely mother to pack her bags. She will be arriving this Sunday, September 12th and will be with you during your surgery next week. As always, we stand in awe of your sacrifice and courage. A wise man once said: “there are only two people who have died for us; Jesus Christ died to save our souls and the American Soldier died to save our freedom.” At Luke’s Wings we recognize your devotion to our great Republic and to all of us and we promise, with funding from our supporters, we will always be here to help you.

Speaking of our supporters, we would like you to know that funding for your mother’s ticket has been made possible by the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, Gamma Eta Chapter at The George Washington University. These noble young men, including Daniel Stanton and Donald Hansel, organized a fundraiser recently which raised over $1,000 dollars for Luke’s Wings.

On this weekend, the weekend of 9/11, and on behalf of all of us at Luke’s Wings, and by extension, the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, we thank you again for everything you do for us. And we are delighted to be able to respond to you with support, as you have, for nine years to the day, responded to the world for us. And we thank your lovely fiancé and your loving mother. Being a wounded warrior is something you do as a family. And we are eternally grateful that you have their support.

With God’s Speed,

Luke’s Wings
